Delicious Steamed Kai - SJ 1-5 1992

Whakarewarewa - the living Māori village

When our class visited
Whakarewarewa, in
Rotorua, we decided to
take some kai to cook in
the boiling hot pools.

     We put some eggs in
flax kits, and we put corn,
potato, and kumara in
flour bags.

     Our guide was the only
one allowed to get close
to the steaming hot water.
She put our flax kits and
flour bags into the water,
and we watched the water
bubble around them,
cooking our kai.

     We wondered what it
would taste like.

Soon it was time to eat – and it was delicious.

We wished we could have our kai cooked this way every day.
