Sugary drinks

This task is about what happens when you add sugar to water.

Question

Manaia's father liked sweet tea. He stirred three heaped teaspoons of sugar into a cup that was almost overflowing. He was surprised that adding the sugar didn't make the tea spill over into the saucer.

What happened to the sugar?

    • The hot tea caused it to evaporate.

    • It settled on the bottom of the cup.

    • It melted and became liquid.

    • It dissolved in the hot liquid.

Question

Manaia was mixing a fruit cordial drink in a large glass which was three-quarters full of water. He was adding spoonfuls of sugar and stirring it in.
If he kept adding sugar and kept stirring the mixture, what would happen eventually?

    • The sugar would continue to dissolve, but Manaia's drink would be very sweet.

    • The mixture would slowly thicken and become a syrup.

    • All the sugar would dissolve, but the volume of the drink would increase.

    • No more sugar would dissolve and it would collect at the bottom of the glass.
