Task administration:
Equipment:
A set of prepared 'dominoes' per student (different coloured paper could be used for each set).
  • Sets 1 and 2 are easier than Set 3.
  • This task requires physical space for students to move around and equipment.

Instructions to be read to student:

  1. "Place the 'start' domino in front of you".
  2. "Then place the rest of the dominos in a line next to it, BUT the dominos must be placed so that the words at the end of one domino describe the animal in the next picture, for example..." (model this to students).

  3. etc.
"Birds have a beak so these dominos can go next to each other".
NOTE: Students may need to rearrange their dominos so that they can get a correct sequence.
  4. When you have a correct line of dominos tell your teacher. (You may want the student to explain to you, or a peer, the relationships that exist).
Level:
2
Description of task:

Science capabilities
The capabilities focus is brought about by the conversations you have and the questions you ask.

Capability: Gather and interpret data
This resource provides opportunities to discuss
  • how scientists look very carefully, and describe exactly what they see.
  • the clues that the pictures provide to help us make inferences.
