Imagine the class is going to have a day skiing. You want good weather to do this because you will be outside for the whole day. The ski forecast you hear will tell you about the weekly weather and snow conditions for three ski fields on Mount Ruapehu. The three ski fields are called Whakapapa, Turoa, and Tukino. Listen carefully then answer the questions that follow.

Welcome to the North Island Central Schools Snow Report. Here is the five-day forecast for the ski fields of Mount Ruapehu.

Monday
Rain from the west this morning, with some heavy falls this afternoon followed by a change to fine spells. Turoa, Tukino, and Whakapapa will open after 2 p.m.

Tuesday
Light snow easing in the morning with some high cloud. Tukino and Turoa will be unavailable to schools because trails are being groomed and realigned. Therefore, Whakapapa will be crowded and long waits for lifts are expected.

Wednesday
Scattered snow in the morning. Winds rising in the afternoon. The status of Turoa is doubtful with snow depth down to 85 cm.

Thursday
Clear, calm weather expected throughout the Mount Ruapehu region. All three ski fields open, and access expected to be good. Temperatures dropping in the evening with frost in some areas.

Friday
Low cloud with mist or drizzle expected. Ski conditions will be fast but expect isolated thunderstorms and lightning later. Turoa has lift maintenance scheduled for this day. On the weekend all three fields could be marginal.
