Description of task:
Task: Identify the colours on a taxi sitting under a red streetlight. Assessment focus: Coloured light can be produced by blocking some parts of the spectrum.
Answers/responses:
Y8 (12/97) |
||
a) | Red | moderate |
b) | Red | easy |
c) | Black | very difficult |
d) | Black | easy |
Teaching and learning:
The red light blocks out all other colours.
- The white taxi will appear red because the red light is reflected back.
- The red roof will appear red because the red light does not cancel out the red paint.
- The blue word taxi will appear black because the red light filters out or blocks the blue.
- The black tyres continue to look black because they absorb all the colour pigment.
It is reasonably easy for students to guess or use prior experience to answer a), b), and d). If c) is answered correctly, it is a good indication of their understanding of the properties of colour.
Asking the question, "Tell me why you answered that way" encourages students to explain what they understand.
Further activities to develop the concept can be found in the Building Science Concepts book, 'Seeing Colours'.
