This task is about tessellating patterns.

Practical task

  • Cut out all the triangles and hexagons below.
  • Arrange all the shapes on a piece of paper so that they make a repeating pattern.
  • Make sure there are no gaps in between your shapes.
  • When you have made your pattern, glue the shapes on to the page.
  • You may leave out one or two shapes if you want to.
  • Ask for another page of shapes if you need more.

Task administration: 

This task is completed with paper and scissors.

Equipment

Scissors; glue; photocopied pages of shapes; one blank A4 sheet of paper per student.

  • Give each student the page of photocopied shapes and read this page of instructions.
  • If you don't see a repeat in the student's pattern, ask them to explain how it might repeat before marking.
  • Some students may need an extra page of shapes to show that their pattern repeats.
