Acids resources

This practical task has two parts. The first part of this practical requires students to observe the effects of different indicators on different substances. Students use these results to identify if some other substances are acid, alkali, or neutral.

Task: Identify which variables should be kept the same to compare reaction times. Assessment focus: control of variables.

Students explain why the metal where some lemon juice had been spilt appears shiny.

Students answer two multiple-choice questions on pH.

Task: Students read a pH scale to determine how it shows the increasing strength of an acid and a base solution and decide from different pH products what the effect would be on an acidic soil. Assessment focus: interpreting a pH scale.

Students use a table of some substances and their pHs to answer four questions.

Explain how to test if a solution is an acid or not, and describe and explain what happens if rusty nails are put in an acid. Assessment focus: acid reactions.

In this NEMP task students conduct a test to identify whether a number of substances are acid, base or neutral. They also answer a question about neutralising. Assessment focus: testing acid or base.

Task: Using the given pH, classify 10 common substances as acidic, basic, or neutral. Assessment focus: knowledge of the pH scale
