Insects resources

Students explain two features of insects and explain how the wings differ between a fly and a butterfly.

Students are provided with seven drawings of different animals and are asked to draw circles around those that are insects. Two features of insects are also required.

Task: Students decide whether six animals are insects or spiders and justify their answers. Assessment focus: Using evidence.

Students are given a diagram of a fly and are asked to give three reasons why this animal is not a spider.

Students identify which one of the four drawn animals is not an insect, and then give a reason for their choice.

Task: sort pictures into specified groups and identify features that are common to each group. Assessment focus: classification of insects/non-insects.

Students use a key to classify and describe a number of the illustrated insects and spiders.

Students are provided with six drawings of different types of insects. They use the drawings to explain two features of insects and to explain differences between the insects illustrated.

For this task students are provided with photographs of four different types of weta. Students are asked to give two features that weta have in common with each other and to give two features that show weta belong to the group insects.
