Task administration:
This task is completed with pencil and paper only.

[Equipment: Two sets of Food Pictures per student, (all the pictures need to be cut out separately); large piece of paper per student; glue or tape.]

  • This assessment activity can be carried out with a group of students sitting apart from each other or with one student at a time.
  • You might need to indicate which foods are meats.
  1. Read the following instructions out to the student(s):
Today we are going to make sandwiches. Here are some pictures of the different fillings we have. You are allowed to choose one meat filling and one other filling to go in your sandwich. Show me all the different combinations of sandwich fillings it would be possible to have. For example, one combination could be chicken and tomato.
  2. Take a chicken and a tomato picture. Place them together as a model of what to do.
  3. Now say to the students:
Use the pictures to show all the other combinations of fillings you could put in your sandwich. You do not have to use up all the cards. When you have made all the combinations that you can, glue or tape them on to a large piece of paper.

Optional activity
Real food (chicken, ham, salami, lettuce, tomato, bread, margarine) can be provided for this activity. When the student(s) has/have made all the combinations they can with the cards, get them to choose the combination they like best to make and eat.
