Asher designed a short survey to give to all Year 8 students at his school. He wanted to report on their favourite take-aways, how often they buy them, and how much they spend.

Read Asher's survey below. On the following page write down five ways his survey could be improved to get the information he wants.

a) Statements highlighting improvements in questionnaire design, these may include:

  • extending age bands.
  • insufficient choice of favourite take-aways listed.
  • inappropriate categorisation of how often take-aways are eaten. Need a scale to quantify responses, e.g., less than 1 per week, 1 per week, 2 per week, etc.
  • overlapping boundaries on money bands.
  • no category for those who spend over $6.
  • category bands for money too narrow.
  • 'other' category for Q's 2, 3, and 5 (1 mark for each question mentioned if listed like this).

Other reasonable suggestions:

  • Need to explain what the survey is about.
  • The questions could be more open-ended.
  • A tick box put in for males and females.
  • Any other acceptable improvements including extra questions.
