NOTE: Students find locating a town much easier than giving the correct directions.
Teaching and learning:
This resource involves working out a cardinal compass (N, S, E, W, NW, NE, etc) bearing from a given location. This involves bringing together two elements: knowing to read the bearing from the origin (town we are getting the bearing from); and knowing that the compass bearings are always the same (North is always North, etc).
Students should have worked with cardinal compass points (before taking and identifying bearings).
Students should have worked with cardinal compass points (before taking and identifying bearings).
Diagnostic and formative information:
Misconception | Next steps | |
c) South East
d) West
|
Students transpose the towns i.e., Dunedin is South East of Alexandra; Nelson is West of Picton.
|
Students may need to work on practical examples and giving directs with the 8 compass points, e.g., the room can be labelled with the compass points and students move to the point called out. |
c) North East
d) West or North West
e) North West
|
Students confuse East and West |
Students may need to work on practical examples utilising the 4 main compass points, especially East and West.
They may also need to develop some way to recall the compass directions: e.g., NEWS, or Never Eat Soggy Weetbix (clockwise rotation).
