Jack and Ellie competed in the 10 kilometre "Shaky-Bridge Run". The graph above shows their progress throughout the race. Write 5 different statements comparing Jack and Ellie's times, distances, and speeds during the race.

Students interpret 2 line graphs to write five statements comparing the relationship between times, distances and speeds for Jack and Ellie in a 10 kilometre running race.

Any 5 of: 

  • Jack ran faster than Ellie for the first half of the race (or vice versa).
  • Jack stopped during the race (between 45 and 55 minutes) whereas Ellie did not.
  • Ellie was running at her fastest between 30-55 minutes, whereas Jack was running his fastest between 0-45 minutes.
  • Both Jack and Ellie completed the run.
  • Both Jack and Ellie had run 7 km in 55 minutes.
  • Ellie finished the run 5 minutes before Jack.
  • Over the whole run Ellie's average speed was greater then Jack's.
  • Other possible comparisons.

NOTE: Students may have written comparisons as 2 statements, e.g.,

  • Ellie finished after 85 minutes.
  • Jack finished after 90 minutes.

In this case, give 1 mark for both statements.
