This task requires making sets that show given fractions.

Task administration: 
[Equipment: Each student requires three pieces of plasticine and one set of Display Cards.]

  • This task assesses students' ability to find fractions of a whole number.
  • This assessment task can be carried out with individual students, or a small group of students working independently.
  • The Display Cards could be laminated so that they can be reused.
  • Teacher to read out the following instructions.
a) i) Break the plasticine into lumps of equal sizes so you can show the fraction 1/10.
  ii) Place the correct number of lumps on the display card to show 1/10 and the remainder.
  iii) Write the remainder as a fraction.
b) i) Break the plasticine into lumps of equal sizes so you can show the fraction 7/8 .
  ii) Place the correct number of lumps on the display card to show 7/8 and the remainder.
  iii) Write the remainder as a fraction.
c) i) Break the plasticine into lumps of equal sizes so you can show the fraction 3/7 .
  ii) Place the correct number of lumps on the display card to show 3/7 and the remainder.
  iii) Write the remainder as a fraction.
