Students convert heights of a building into the percentage of the given total height, explaining how they solved some conversions. Assessment focus is on how they calculate these heights and what strategies they use.
Students first do the science activity Throwing Balloons 2 (PW2548) where they predict, observe, and explain what will happen when a balloon containing another balloon filled with water is thrown. Then the students do this writing task where they describe the balloon and what happened when it was thrown, and explain why they think it moved the way it did. Six annotated exemplars of student scripts (writing) are included under the "Working with Students" tab.
Students complete a table showing the number of rungs for different sized ladders. They complete a sentence stating the rule to calculate the number of rungs given the length, and use the rule to identify if a ladder, at a lean, will reach a given height and show their working.
